Following a dual-ship "hold down" exercise by Carpenter and Sproston in opposition to the conventionally powered submarine Bashaw on 23 May, the destroyer moved again to Pearl Harbor for 3 weeks of repairs alongside Bryce Canyon. The washer was unboxed on the ramp at the airfield, loaded within the helicopter and flown to the ship, the place it was plumbed in to the water system and served because the crew laundry for the next several weeks. In summer time 1989, whereas Carr was heading to the Puerto Rican Operation Area (PROA) for the Middle East Force Exercise (MEFEX), both of the ship's laundry washers broke down. In October 1988, Carr made a port visit to Tampa, Florida, on the request of the local Navy League chapter, mooring at Harbor Island pier. Operating out of Yokosuka, the destroyer conducted extensive ASW coaching with ships of the seventh Fleet, visited ports in the Philippines and Hong Kong, and operated with items of the Royal Australian Navy. News crews from NBC, headed by Henry Champ, and ABC, by Bob Zelnick, every spent a day aboard Carr to observe the training. In June, 2011 Carr arrived in Staten Island, NY for new York City Fleet Week and Boston, MA for Dorchester Day.
