Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has revealed his preferred role on the pitch, stating he thrives as a
box-to-box midfielder who can both attack and
defend effectively. The Nigerian international, who joined Lazio last summer, has faced a challenging debut season, registering three goals and one assist in 19 Serie A appearances.
In an interview with Sports Boom, Dele-Bashiru emphasised his ability to drive with the ball, make intelligent runs, and contribute at both ends of the pitch. "Driving of the ball, running off the ball, I can attack well, and defend well also. All around, I’m what you describe as a box-to-box midfielder," he explained.
The 24 year old, a Manchester City academy product, is eager to regain full fitness and tactical sharpness as he pushes for a starting spot ahead of Lazio’s upcoming clash with Parma. Dele-Bashiru missed Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March due to injury but hopes to impress enough for a Super Eagles recall ahead of the Unity Cup in London.
Editorial
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s self-description as a true box-to-box midfielder is a refreshing reminder of the kind of versatility Nigerian football must embrace. In a
landscape often obsessed with flair and flashy forwards, players who can balance creativity with responsibility are rare and invaluable.

What makes Dele-Bashiru’s story even more compelling is his
resilience. A difficult first season at Lazio could have dented his confidence, but instead, he speaks with clarity about his strengths and his determination to adapt and thrive. That kind of mindset separates talents who fade from those who rise.
For the Super Eagles, adding players like Dele-Bashiru—dynamic, balanced, and tactically astute could be crucial as we build a team capable of
competing at the highest levels. Nigeria needs midfielders who are complete, not just
explosive.

The ball is now in Dele-Bashiru’s court. If he seizes his moment at Lazio, a bigger role with Nigeria may not be far behind.
