I don't think it's a feature of that particular session, but rather of sessions that are just too big, especially outdoors. Historically I never used to go to the Red Lion session, well not the official one for exactly those reasons.
Unofficially, the best tunes have always been inside the pub, later in the evening after the diners have finished. It's always a much smaller group in a room where it is possible to listen to each other. Covid and a change of management have put paid that that but it was always my preferred option.
I think this year we can also add a dash of understandable over-exuberance from people finally let out to play to the mix. Combined with the sheer size of the session, a smattering of nervous newbies who generally tend to play over-fast in sessions, the festival atmosphere, a hot sunny day and of course drink and that was the result.
You certainly weren't the only one who got quickly fed up with the speed but there was not a lot one could do. Personally I managed to hang for a fair while, mostly because I was with friends I haven't seen that much recently. The snare drum being played across the beat almost managed to drive me away buy it was the cajon being played insensitively that finally did it.
